Moving House with Pets in the UAE: A Practical Guide

Written by Layla Haddad·Reviewed by Omar Rahimi

Start crate or carrier training at least a week before move day if your pet isn't used to one. A carrier that only appears on stressful days becomes a source of anxiety itself, short, positive sessions beforehand help.

On move day, keep pets in a quiet, closed room away from the main traffic of movers and open doors, with a sign on the door so nobody opens it by mistake. This is the single biggest factor in preventing pets from escaping during a move.

Pack a pet 'go-bag' separately from the general move boxes: food, water, medication, a familiar blanket, and any documents needed if you're changing emirates or travelling internationally with the pet.

At the new home, set up one familiar-smelling room first, their bed, bowls and toys, before letting them explore the rest of the house. This gives them a secure base rather than an overwhelming new space all at once.

If you're relocating internationally with a pet, start researching import requirements at least six to eight weeks ahead, since vaccination and documentation timelines vary significantly by destination country.
